11/12/2023 0 Comments Elixir power converter troubleshootingTherefore, when I replaced the converter, I hooked it up to the 20 amp breaker instead of the 15 amp one. In ours, the propane detector is mounted right next to it, and times when it has made chirping sounds, at first I mistakenly thought they were coming from the converter.Īlso, on our camper, we don't have air conditioning, so the 20 amp breaker is completely unused. This is kind of obvious, but make sure the sound is coming out of the converter. He was a nice guy, but he didn't seem to know anything about the inner workings. Of course, be sure to unplug the trailer first, and it's not a bad idea to drag the plug inside next to where you're working, so you know for sure that some helpful person won't see it and plug it in.īefore I replaced it, I called Elixir and spoke to their technician, to see if he had any ideas about repairing it. It's not very difficult, as long as you feel comfortable working with 120 volt circuits. Replacing it does require opening up the breakers and wiring in the new one. I really don't know whether another brand would slip right into the same spot. When I replaced ours, I toyed with the idea of getting another model, but replacing it with the identical converter made the job very easy. I think I fried it by inadvertenly plugging in the trailer with a completely dead battery. We recently had to replace the same converter after a couple of years. I was going to suggest the fan motor, but apparently you've ruled that out. The only changes/mods I've done electrically are a few LED replacement bulbs inside.Īctually, I think it's a switching power supply, so it doesn't contain a transformer. I read that one way to check whether it is working is to disconnect the negative batt lead while connected to shore power, which i did and the lights all worked, but the squealing was almost continuous. I parked the pup for a couple months, in that time I noticed the break away plunger was pulled, and the batt was totally dead.after a couple days the converter charged it back up, and it seems to be holding a charge. We just got back from our second trip and the whole time it was squealing every time the converter kicked in (as well as before the trip). If the elixir is just going to be a problem, then I will go for the WFCO.Īs background we used the pup without this problem for our first trip. It seems the WFCO 8735 is a popular replacement for this converter but if I could save the $150 that would be great. It's not the fan either.Ī quick search reveals problems with this converter so before I replace it, does anyone have any wise words? Is it fixable? It is charging the batt and supplying dc without the batt connected, but the noise is unacceptable. the less load the less frequently it happens. I'm trying to figure out a problem with our pup's converter, it has started to squeal every few minutes if I'm using any DC.
